Lancing Punch
In this application, the customer required an elongated D lancing punch. Lancing is defined as a process where material is sheared and bent to make tabs, vents and louvers. During the process, there's no material removed, it is formed into the shape required. The customer requested a 13/32" x 1-19/32" tab to be generated. We machined a blend radius on the rectangle end of the die to prevent the material from shearing. The angle of the tab varies depending on the stroke of the punch.
Check out the pictures and video to see how the tooling and finished product were used!

Custom Gum Drop Punch
Our customer needed to manufacture gum drop shaped tabs with
½” holes using their Marvel MSIW60D ironworker. Our engineering team determined
a two-step operation would be necessary to produce these tabs.
The first operation included manufacturing gum drop shaped
tooling to fit the oversize attachment. The punch was machined with a flat face
and we used .028” clearance to ensure each tab would be free of any
distortions. Lastly, it was critical to machine a 1/4“x1/8” keyway on the punch
and whistle notches on the die to provide proper alignment during the punching
proce ss.
To begin the second operation, we replaced the oversize
attachment with the standard attachment for punching the ½” round holes. This
is an easy switch and tooling is more cost effective. We designed a die with 3
alignment pins to guarantee the hole would be punched in the same position on
each tab.
The customer will weld these onto their product and utilize
the round holes for bolts.

drawing and we can make it happen!

Ripping Punch
The requirement to punch oblong/slotted holes beyond the
capacity of an ironworker is a common occurrence and we have a solution!
Ripping punches allow an ironworker to punch holes of any
length with a continued cycle. First, punch a round hole in the same size as
the width of your desired oblong hole. Next, insert the guide of the ripping
punch through the pre-punched hole and begin cycling the machine while feeding
the material into the guide. Continue this process until you achieve the length
of oblong/slot desired.
When ordering please provide the following information:
figure number of punch and die, material thickness and dimensions indicated in
the diagram below.
**SAFETY WARNING** Do not punch with the guide!
Example:
- Machine: Peddinghaus 1100G
- Punch: F-20
- Die: F-59
- ‘A’ Dimension: 13/16”
- ‘L’ Dimension: 1-1/4”
- Material Thickness: 3/8” Mild Steel

Mandrel Punch
With help from the customer, our engineers designed this mandrel set-up for the Geka Hydracrop 55A Ironworker. This custom designed attachment allows the customer to quickly and easily punch four oblong holes in 2" schedule 40 pipe. By adding a location spring, the pipe can easily be rotated at 90° for accurate punching. Prior to this design, the customer was milling each hole individually; a costly operation requiring multiple touches from the operator. This solution allowed the customer to punch four holes in less than one minute, increasing throughput and dramatically reducing cost per piece. Reach our engineering team at 800-451-4342 to start designing your custom application.

Extrusion Punch
The bullet punch is used to manufacture
extruded edges from a pre-existing hole. These extruded holes are typically
used to accept sheet metal screws, provide spacing in panels, strengthening holes
in parts that are mounted with rods or bolts, or to allow tapping into a deeper
distance past the material thickness. On what applications do you use extruded
holes?

Urethane Strippers
Stripping material is a
crucial part of the punching process. The video on the left shows the standard
stripper assembly on the Piranha P-50 ironworker. The yellow base is the
stripper foot and the black tubes on either side of the punch are the urethane
strippers. When released the urethanes press down on the stripper foot. The
stripper foot then strips the material off the punch.
The photos on the right
show the different urethane strippers we stock. Unlike the black Piranha
strippers, the red and blue strippers slide over the punch to strip the
material. The colors signify different hardness/durometer of urethane. The
harder urethane (red) is used for thicker material, while the softer urethane
(blue) is used for thinner material. It’s important to use the correct urethane
to ensure the material will not distort while stripping. When the urethane starts
to crack, it is time to be replaced. This helps ensure quality holes and
extended tool life.

Special Punch
The punch and die industry is in contact with all types of
industries ranging from manufacturing to jewelry, but recently we received a
request to manufacture this punch for creating animal tags. These tags are used by scientist to track the
movement and habits of different water animals ranging from fish, like bass or
tarpon, to shellfish. The punch is used to punch out a plastic tag that’s
identified with a specific number. This number
is specific to the animal and the region it originates from. Scientists use
this tag to track an animal’s habits and migration patterns. No matter what industry you’re in, contact us
today for all of your punching needs!

Louver Assembly
Louvers have been around for hundreds of years, in the beginning
these were made from barrels to allow ventilation while cooking or for a fire
place while keeping the rain and snow out. With the evolution of technology,
louvers can now be manufactured in metal to act as an air vent. These can be
used on a variety of products such as lockers or any type of equipment that
would need ventilation and temperature control. We manufacture louvers in form
up and form down positions from 2” to 6” long. The louvers are manufactured with
a spring load system to help strip the material off the cutting blades. These
cutting blades are replaceable components within the louver assembly. Check out
the video below to watch a louver in action on our Piranha P-50. Give us a call
to get a quote on your louver today!

The Hardcoating Difference
Do you have a punching application where galling or tooling life is an issue? Or, is your particular punching application preventing you from using a punching lubricant? By utilizing a variety of Cleveland Punch and Die coatings, a better tooling life can be achieved. With a delivery time of approximately one week, we are able to get these items out the door much faster than the competition! CPD offers three types of coatings depending on your requirements:
CPD MG1 Coating:
- A general purpose, gold colored coating, allowing higher punching speeds and longer tooling life.
- Especially effective when punching copper, bus bar and aluminum.
- Standard coating on our FP1 style punch.
CPD MG2 Coating:
- A harder, more lubricious coating offering better performance in steels and aluminum.
- Minimizes galling due to rapid punching.
- Commonly used in higher strength steels and when the punch size is smaller than material thickness.
- This coating is useful on "Insert" and "Style 1" Whitney™ punches.
CPD MG3 Coating:
- The most abrasion resistant and hardest coating for punching heat resistant alloys.
The punches and dies shown are for a custom die set but coated punches and dies can be manufactured for any set up. Call Cleveland Punch today to get more information on our coating options!

punch and die holder for the Geka machines to assist in punching angle. This
week we will cover another option for punching angle. The Geka GXL punches are
extended length punches that are used in conjunction with the Leg Up Stripper
attachment (LUPPS attachment). The LUPPS attachment is a modified stripper
assembly that allows you to punch angles in the leg up position. The length of
the punch used within the LUPPS attachment varies depending on the model of Geka
Ironworker. We stock round punches in the 78MM and 97MM overall lengths. We can
manufacture any shape or size upon request. Check out the video below and contact the Green Team today with
any questions or to place an order!

Geka Offset Tooling
The offset tooling set up in a Geka Hyd. 55 A |
Is your ironworker a Geka
Hydrocrop 55, 80 or 110? If so, your machine can hold our Geka offset tooling
to easily punch holes in angle. In order to use the offset punch and die holder
you will need to remove the die reducer from the die block, insert the die
spacer, then insert the offset die holder. For the punch portion, the punch
ring (GKA3) for the F-26 punch will be used. The offset punch holder will drop
into the sleeve and be screwed into the coupling nut to lock in the machine.
The two different offset die holders, punch holder and a few punches and dies. |
Once the offset holders are in
place, the punch and die can be inserted. The Geka offset tooling is a 12MM
straight shank punch and a 35MM outside diameter die. The max material that can
be punch is 1/8” stainless steel or ¼” mild steel. Cleveland Punch stocks the
holders along with the round punches and dies. Watch the video below to see the

Picket Tooling
Cleveland Punch and Die manufactures standard and custom Picket Tooling for the ornamental iron and residential fence industry.
CPD picket tooling is stocked in our F-26 punch and our F-62 die. Our stock tooling generates a 60 degree picket on square tubing, but we can manufacture any specific degree per our customer's request. We stock picket tools for use with 1/2", 5/8", 3/4" and 1" square tubing. It is important to remember when you are punching a hole for a square picket to pass through, you will need a hole slightly larger than the picket itself. For example, if you are trying to pass a 1/2" square picket through a piece of material, we recommend you punch a 17/32" square hole to allow the picket to pass through the material adequately.
Cleveland Punch has also recently manufactured a custom picket tooling set for fabricating aluminum residential fence. This tooling package was customized to fit the customer's machine and job specifications. You can use it for round or square-shaped posts and pickets. Call your Cleveland Punch representative today for any picket tooling needs.

Corner Radius Tooling
Cleveland Punch and Die’s corner radius tooling is perfect
for punching a radius on the corner of square or rectangle material. We stock
3/8, 7/16, ½, 9/16 and ¾” corner radius punch and die sets and special sizes
can be manufactured upon request.
Corner radius tooling is easy to use. First, place the punch and die in your
ironworker as you would a standard shape. After the punch and die are in the
machine, jog the punch down so the guide is slightly above the die. At this
point, make sure the punch and die are aligned properly. Once they are aligned,
tighten the coupling nut, die block and the setscrew on the die. During the
corner radius punching process, the guide of the punch will stay in the die at
all times. This will reduce run time and ensure accuracy on each radius. The
stroke of the punch can be controlled by the limit switch on your ironworker.
Remember, Cleveland Punch always recommends using PunchEasy
lubricant to reduce galling and increase life of each punch and die.

Pipe Notch Tooling
Are you a fabricator that is looking to cope or “fish mouth”
the ends of your tube or pipe? We have the perfect solution for you! Cleveland
Punch and Die stocks pipe notch housings, tooling and striker punches! We stock
1”, 1-1/4”, 1-1/2” and 2” schedule 40 pipe notch tooling for Piranha, Edwards,
& Spartan ironworkers. Stock sizes ship same day and special sizes can be
manufactured upon request.
Your ironworker can be ready to cope in a matter of minutes.
All that’s required is to replace the die block with the pipe notch housing and
replace the standard punch with the striker punch. If you don’t have an
ironworker, that’s not a problem! Since the pipe notch assembly is a
self-contained unit, any of these housings can be used on a hydraulic press as
long as there are bolts to hold the die portion and a ram to strike the top of
the tooling.
If you would like additional information regarding pipe
notch tooling, please contact one of our “Green Team” representatives for
assistance. We can be reached at 800-451-4342 or sales@clevelandpunch.com
